Concerning the English version, the translation was specifically for
the published libretto. It differs from the other “official”
English adaptation by R.H. Elkin included in the dual-language edition
of the published vocal score. As such, it reflects more faithfully the
sense and style of the original, although some may take issue with its
excessive reliance on cognates or its deliberately antiquated style.
It also translates all of the text, whether set or not, and most of the
stage directions (SD), many not included in the vocal score. The major
exceptions are those passages in Act III that were set by Franco Alfano
and then excised from the second version, issued before publication of the
dual-language libretto. Original translations in a similar style have
been provided for those missing lines and directions.

|
I:253 |
Forza divina! is not set. |
II(i):15–18 |
Lines 15–16 are transposed in L2 and also lines 17–18,
while leaving the SP in the original order; this error
would suggest that Pong and Pang begin to confuse their respective
responsibilities for weddings and funerals!
|
II(i):18 |
The lack of the initial article I appears to be a typographical
error, in view of the horizontal placement of the rest of the line
(and its inclusion in the score).
The lacuna was faithfully propagated into L2, even when the
line was transposed with its neighbor.
|
II(i):32 |
In the score this line is divided between Pong and Pang; Ping never sings it.
|
II(i):39 |
con questo che va sotto.

L2 contains the SD prorompendo gioiosamente here for the crowd,
but the SD is not in the English translation, nor is it in the score.

is not set.
|
III(i):24–25 |
Ping's line (su noi!) is not set, and Pang's and Pong's lines were
transposed. In Ping's line 25 corre is not set.
|

Uddisti il bando?

III(i):31 |
Ping's line (Più belle ignude) is not set.
|
III(i):42–43 |
This phrase (e avrai la gioia / d'aver vinto, tu solo, Turandot!)
is not set.
|
III(i):46 |
tu sei salvo |
Va' lontano |
III(i):49–60 |
This entire section of 11 lines is set as ensemble for all three masques and
the chorus. The final words (Abbi pietà) are not set.
|
III(i):63 |
Lei sola, voglio! Voglio Turandot! |
Crollasse il mondo, voglio Turandot! |
III(i):106 |
In the score Turandot interjects the words (L'Amore?) at this point.
|
III(i):117 |
Saran per lui, l'offerta |
Come offerta |
III(i):134 |
In VS2 the lines Parla! Parla! Il nome! Il nome!
for the crowd were added during this action; but they were not added to
L2. (Subsequent editions provide pitched singing [and a third
Il nome!]; in VS2 the lines are shouted, only the rhythm
being notated.)
|
III(i):134 |
In VS2 an additional line for the Unknown Prince, Ah! Tu sei morta
preceds this line. This added line was included in L2, though the
translation was misplaced (see below).
|
III(i):151 |
per sempre is not set.
|
III(i):159—160 |
Ombra dolente, non farci del male!
Ombra sdegnosa, perdona! perdona!
|
Liù, bontà, perdona! perdona!
|
III(i):175 |
libera e pura! |
These words were not in the original score, but were added in the
second version. |
III(i):181 |
sfiorerò |
stringerò |
III(i):186 |
Il gelo tuo è menzogna! |
Io ti voglio mia! |
|
In the score the words: Il gelo tuo è menzogna! follow
line 190. |
III(i):191 |
In the score this line is preceded by the line:
La mia bocca premerò su di te! It was dropped from VS2
and appears in neither libretto. |
III(i):192 |
Che fai di me? |
Che è mai di me? |
III(i):213 |
No, Principessa! No! |
No! Essa incomincia! Miracolo! |
| Before Miracolo! Turandot sings Onta su me!
|
III(i):224 |
This line was set in VS1, but removed from VS2 and L2.
|
III(i):228 |
In the score this line is followed by: Te! Solo te!.
|
III(i):229–231 |
C'era negli occhi tuoi
la luce degli eroi,
la superba certezza |
C'era negli occhi tuoi
la luce degli eroi,
C'era negli occhi tuoi
la superba certezza
|
III(i):237 |
In the score this line is followed by: da un tormento che non sapevo..
|
III(i):239–240 |
These two lines were set in VS1, but removed from VS2 and L2.
|
III(i):245–246 |
Line 245 is not in the score. The following line was also dropped from VS2 (along with the parti of line 248), and neither line appears in
L2. |
III(i):255–274 |
The setting of the remainder of this scene up to the off-stage chorus is
quite different from the libretto:
|
|
TURANDOT
… Arbitra sono
ormai del tuo destino!
CALAF
Che m'importa la vita!
È pur bella la morte!
TURANDOT
Non più il grido del popolo!… Lo scherno!…
Non più umiliata e prona
la mia fronte ricinta di corona!…
So il tuo nome! il tuo nome!…
La mia gloria risplende!
CALAF
La mia gloria è il tuo amplesso!
La mia vita il tuo bacio!
TURANDOT
Odi? Squillan le trombe!… È l'alba! È l'alba!
È l'ora della prova!
CALAF
Non la temo!
Dolce morir così!
TURANDOT
Nel cielo è luce!
Tramontaron le stelle! È la vittoria!
Il popolo s'addensa nella Reggia…
E so il tuo nome!… So il tuo nome!
CALAF
Il tuo
sarà l'ultimo mio grido d'amore!
TURANDOT
Tengo nella mia mano la tua vita!
Calaf!… Davanti al popolo, con me!
|
TURANDOT
… Arbitra son
del tuo destino!
Tengo nella mia mano la tua vita…
Tu me l'ha data… È mia! È mia!
Mia più del mio trono…
più della stessa mia vita.
CALAF
Prendila dunque!
È pur bella la morte!
Fammi morir! Fammi morir!
TURANDOT
È l'alba! È l'alba! È l'alba!
Non più dovrà piegarsi innanzi a te
la mia fronte ricinta di Corona!
So il tuo nome! Ah!
CALAF
La mia gloria è il tuo amplesso!
TURANDOT
Odi! Squillan le trombe!
CALAF
La mia vita il tuo bacio!
TURANDOT
Ecco… È l'ora della prova!
CALAF
Non la temo!
TURANDOT
Calaf, davanti al popolo, con me!
CALAF
Hai vinto tu!
|
|
Additional cuts were made in VS2, and most of these are reflected
in L2, so that only lines 264–267 and 274 of this section remain
there. The final line of set text (Hai vinto tu!) was added to L2.
|
III(i):275–281 |
The offstage chorus was removed from VS2, and these lines consequently
dropped from L2, in which however the preceding SD (Voci sempre
più vicino si diffondono) remains!
|
III(ii):1 |
Diecimila anni al nostro Imperatore!! |
This line was dropped from L2, although it is set in both versions
of the score. Likewise, acclama: was dropped from the preceding SD.
|
III(ii):2 |
Ora conosco il nome |
conosco il nome |
III(ii):5 |
— Amore!… |
This line was reassigned from Calaf to the chorus in VS1. It was
changed from Amore to Amor in VS2; it was dropped from L2.
|
III(ii):8–9 |
Il tuo nome, o Principessa,
è Luce… — È Primavera…
|
Ride e canta nel Sole
l'infinità nostra felicità!
|
|
The text as set replaces this in L2. In VS1, during this chorus
Turandot and Calaf sing Amore! and (ad libitum) Eternità!,
but these lines were dropped from VS2.
|
III(ii):10 |
— Principessa! — Gloria! — Amor!
|
— Gloria a te! — Principessa! — Amor!
|
|
|
In L2 and VS2, only Gloria a te! survives.
