Prologue

Scene 1: Moscow; the walled, turreted courtyard of the Novodievichy monastery
During the opening andante, dejected groups of common people gather before the monastery walls. Prince Shuisky and prominent boyars cross to the monastery, greeting the commoners. A police officer intimidates the people who huddle together into one group and stand stock still.

Wielding a cudgel, the police officer urges them into action. They beg for pity
