Bastien und Bastienne
Performance History
First performance: (amateur) October 1768?, Home of Dr. Anton Mesmer,
Rauchfangkehrergasse (now Rasumovskygasse), Landstrasse (then a suburb
of Vienna)
Cast: unknown
There is no contemporary record of the private performance of Bastien und
Bastienne at the home of Dr. Mesmer. The earliest mention of the event
is in G. N. von Nissen's Biographie W. A. Mozarts, published 60 years
later, in 1828. (The garden theater in which the performance is often
said to have taken place did not exist in 1768.) The recitatives were added later, for a projected performance in Salzburg that never took place.
